part of speech,
any one of the classes into which words are divided according to their use or function in sentences. The traditional parts of speech are the noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.
Usage parts of speech. One of the fundamental facts of English grammar is that a word may function as more than one part of speech: In “Iron rusts if left in the rain,” rust is a verb; in “Remove the rust with a wire brush,” rust is a noun; in “She wore a rust dress and brown shoes,” rust is an adjective. This shows that the part of speech to which a word belongs cannot be definitely decided by looking at the word by itself; we need to know how it is used.
